When I was a little girl a kind neighbor gave us his daughter's old dollhouse. She had grown up and moved away from home and the little house was just collecting dust in the garage. My three sisters and I probably spent more time fixing up, decorating, and playing with that wooden dollhouse than any other toy we ever owned.

My love of dollhouses is apparent in the fact that my 6-year-old owns four dollhouses already. I'm sure if I had the space I would continue to acquire these little houses until I had a whole city.

This year there are lots of fun houses to choose from. While I can't imagine plunking down $699 for the Park palace Hotel (and that doesn't include the furniture or dolls), it sure is fun to look at. I'm leaning more towards the Woodland Tree House since we're really into fairies and little animals this year. Whichever you choose I'm sure will bring years of happy imaginative play.

Dutch Door

While I could never afford this amazing custom made dutch door (cost $1990.00),I love the idea of it. I am not a fan of little people making midnight visits to my room. Once I move my babies to a big kid bed we put a gate up in their doorway to keep them in their bedrooms. I like the gate because they can still see out and call to us if they need help, they just can't get out of the room.

The dutch door would work even better. I could simply latch or unlatch the top part of the door as needed, no baby gate to climb through every time I needed to go in our out of the room. I have a very clever friend who made her own dutch door from the one already hanging at her house. They sawed the door in half and then added a little trim and a latch and viola, instant dutch door.

I recently read a friend's post here about her problem with mice. One of my most vivid memories from childhood involved mice. We lived in Colorado and apparently there was a crack in the foundation of our home. This crack led to an infestation of mice in our house. After several weeks of using traps and leaving poison about my dad decided to tackle the problem head on.

He knew the mice were living in our storage room where we had bags of wheat, flour, and sugar. For some unknown reason he chose to bring all five of the kids downstairs and lined us up on a table to watch him do his dirty work. He armed himself with a shop vac. and began pulling bags of wheat off the shelves and sucking up the frantic mice. Pretty soon the shop vac was quite full of scurrying mice and the children were all begging to keep them as pets. This request was of course denied and the mice were summarily disposed of.

The mice in this cute little box above (which is also a puppet) are much nicer than the mice of my childhood. You can pick them up from romp for only $11.00.

I just bought these two French art kits from Land of Nod for my oldest daughter. She is a prolific artist and I would love to get her into some classes. However, we live in a teeny town without access to those kinds of enrichment activities.

Since I am not gifted in this area I though we would try these kits. There is one for a beginner and another for more advanced work. They have been very helpful and fun. There are puzzles, pictures that you finish drawing, and little cards that show you how to draw lots of things in four easy steps. The beginners kit comes with dry erase markers and a cloth to wipe off your pages so you can practice again and again until you get your pictures just right. The art kits are on sale right now for $12.95 and $16.95 and are well worth the price.

We're excited that Easter comes early this year, I can't wait for Spring after our first real winter. Buy This Thing

Two weeks ago my family and I went on a trip to Disneyland. This was our first time flying with all three kids and I was quite intimidated by the amount of gear involved. We had to take two giant car seats (both Brittax weighing at least 25 lbs a piece), a double stroller, and several pieces of luggage. I wasn't sure how we'd drag ourselves through the airport until I came upon this wonderful invention. It's called the Pac Back and you can buy it from One Step Ahead for $39.95. People, it is worth every penny and then some.

How it works: basically there are two straps the you click onto your car seat. One goes over the top and the other around the base. The straps are easy to adjust and will fit any car seat. I would suggest practicing once before your get to the airport so that your straps are already adjusted to the correct lengths. Then you wear the car seat just like a back pack. I will never drag a heavy car seat through the airport again.

I have been a huge fan of Maclaren strollers since I had my first baby. Such a fan in fact that I own three of them. I've always gone with the basic gray because I wanted something unisex. It's kind of boring though and sometimes when I see people out and about who opted for pink or orange or red, I wish I had picked a stroller with a bit more color.

Now I can change the look of my stroller without having to go out and buy a new one. These are some of the gifts my oldest daughter received for Christmas this year. The felt purses are by En Gry & Sif. The doll house purse is so cute I want to get one for myself. I love the little wooden doll highchair. It was not the easiest thing to put together but it is so classically beautiful I forgave it for being difficult. Lovely Christmas Toys

My son received some wonderful new toys for Christmas that I just had to write about. First there are these wonderful painted wooden animals from Holztiger, a German toy company, which you can find at Chasing Fireflies, and Oompa Toys. You can purchase the animals individually for between $8.00 and $16.00 dollars, or get the ark set (does not include the whale, dolphin, or shark) for $278. These are definitely heirloom quality and I'm sure will be with our family until I have grandkids. They also offer lots of farm animals and an enormous ark for all the animals to live in (price $900).

The next item I loved was this Wheely Bug from Prince Lionheart (retail $60). This is perfect for toddlers to scoot around on, no pedals to try and figure out. My favorite thing about this toy though, is that it comes fully assembled. You just open the box and it's ready for action. This is a miraculous thing for any parent who has spent hours constructing toys, bikes, and furniture for children on Christmas Eve. They come in three patterns, lady bug, bee, and cow. The day after Thanksgiving I took advantage of some of the great sales. I placed an order at Crazy8. This is a new store from the same company that owns Gymboree and Janie and Jack. I've been a day planner user since I was in Junior High. I like to pretend I am organized. Since becoming a mom I found that traditional planners weren't working as well. I no longer needed to plan out every hour of the day, but I did need to keep track of all the play dates, birthday parties, and doctor appointments that come along with 3 kids. Two years ago I discovered the MomAgenda. I have been converted ever since, and just purchased my third one.

My favorite thing about it is that there is a space on the weekly planning pages to write schedules for up to 4 children. There is also a space to plan meals. The front of the planner has monthly calendars, next comes weekly planners, and the last part is an address book with pages for planning parties, trips, and keeping track of all your families other important information like doctors, babysitters, and favorite websites.

The Anti-"Made in China" Movement

I am not a fan of things made in China. It's nothing against the Chinese, I just think we are all digging ourselves into a serious economic hole by relying so heavily upon them for our manufacturing needs. I also think it is unfortunate that we are giving away so many of our jobs to people living in foreign countries. And of course there is concern about violations of Child Labor Laws, lax safety guidelines, and quality control. It seems like nowadays everything is made in China. Even when I try and buy from companies based in most European countries I find out their products are produced in China.

Happily some companies are starting to appreciate that we don't all want to buy things made in China. I have found two children's toy companies that will let you search for toys based on which country they are made in. Both FAO Schwarz and Oompa Toys offer this service. Right now the selection for items not made in China is pretty small, but if more people buy things made outside of China companies will start to carry more of these items.

I am also a huge fan of both J Crew (which gets most of it's shoes from Italy) and Garnet Hill (which gets the majority of it's products from Germany, Switzerland, and the United States)

If anyone knows of other companies that offer children's items which are not produced in China I would love to hear about them. Especially any companies that carry items produced in the United States.

I found it on One Good Bumblebee, a fun little website I discovered while bloghopping. It has a little tin to place the tooth in, (that way I won't have to touch it) and a certificate that the tooth fairy leaves with a gift for your child. I think this will be so cute to frame when my oldest looses her first tooth.

Animal Slippers

Since we've moved to a cold weather state I've been obsessing a bit about warm clothes and accessories. I'm going a crazy for flannel sheets, hats, mittens, and scarves. Russell's sweet Grandma Myrna sent us these darling boiled wool slippers from Garnet Hill. They come in 14 different styles and my kids love them. They're made in Germany and cost $38.00. I'm sure they'll keep little feet nice and toasty this winter.

These are some of the pretty things I've purchased for the baby. I just love these little blue ballet shoes from Elephantito. I remember my friend Jen telling of some pretty ballet baby shoes that she saw in Paris so when I saw these I had to have them.

The dress is by Petit Ami and I got it from Best Dressed Child on sale for $17.00. It was originally $74.00. I love the hand embroidered garden.

JJ Cole BundleMe Lite

This is my new favorite thing for baby, the JJ Cole BundleMe Lite. I bought it from Babystyle for $25.00. It is really easy to put on your car seat or stroller. It attaches with Velcro around the straps of the carseat. They come in lots of different colors and three different materials for different temperatures. It's easy to zip baby in and is better than a blanket because it can't be kicked off. I love the convenience of always having something warm to snuggle baby in, I never have to worry about forgetting a blanket. I plan to get a regular fleece BundleMe for the colder months.

Boppy

Oh how I love the Boppy pillow. I have owned one ever since I had my first baby and it is one of my favorite parenting innovations. It is a wonderful help when you're nursing, but also useful for many other things. I love to use it whenever my toddlers want to hold the baby. You pop it on their lap and set the baby on top and they feel like such a grow-up because you don't have to help them hold the baby. It's also great for propping up your cherub before they can sit on their own. I really think this is a must-have for all new parents.

The covers come in every print and fabric imaginable so you can find one to match any decor. The covers are removable and machine washable. Just about every store that carries baby products sells them so they're easy to find. Try Target, Babies R Us, Pottery Barn Kids, or Babystyle.

I first came across this website three years ago while looking for stores that carried Tea Collection children's clothing. There are two Red Balloon Co. stores in the Chicago area, and the website sells the most delightful children's things.

Since first discovering this website I have purchased many items. I have always been happy with the things I've received. Customer service is superb, and they will gift wrap almost anything for no charge. If they are ever out of an item you desire they are quick to suggest lovely alternative items.

They always have the best selection of children's books and toys. I've discovered many wonderful new authors and illustrators from their book section. Many of their items are imported from Europe and South America, and since I am attempting to buy as few items produced in China as possible this is a plus.

They carry books, toys, clothing, furniture, and room accessories. They also offer a gift registry and personalized items. I would highly recommend checking them out.

I love Zofran

I like to think of Zofran as my little magic pill. When I was pregnant with my first baby I was diagnosed with a special malady called Hyperemesis Gravidarum. That basically means that instead of regular morning sickness, I had hyper morning sickness. Whereas my friends and family members might lose their lunch a couple of times during the first trimester, I would lose mine 6-9 times a day, every day. After two visits to the doctor and one to the ER for dehydration (at my 6 week mark mind you) the doctor finally prescribed Zofran. I took it for a few days and turned back into an almost normal person. It didn't take away all the nausea, but I was no longer throwing up. Then my doctor wanted me to wean myself off of it. Within a day of going off it I was nauseous and throwing up again, and within a few days I was back in the ER. This time I was so dehydrated I was admitted to the hospital for two days. After that I was back on Zofran until I hit the 20 week mark.

With my subsequent pregnancies I would hit my OB up for my prescription the minute I saw two lines on the little stick. This lovely drug comes in pill form and also quick tabs that dissolve on your tongue. There is now a generic form called Ondansetron, which should save you all a lot of money because the name brand costs $18 a pill. My insurance would only cover 9 pills at a time because of the expense, so we'd be shelling out $60 a month in co-pays for my magic pill. Your doctor will decide which dose is best for you. My first OB would only give me 4 mgs once a day. By the time I had my son almost three years later I could have up to 16 mgs a day. I have to say though that I didn't notice any difference between 8 mgs and 16 mgs so I only took 8 mgs.

Zofran is great because it has no side effects and has been used for pregnant women long enough for you and your doctor to feel safe using it. I've survived three pregnancies on it and have happy healthy kids.

One of my other favorite anti-nausea medications is Promethazine. This one I love because it makes you very sleepy. I have been told that most women become very tired when they are pregnant, but I have never experienced this. I suffer from terrible insomnia when I am pregnant and it is not a good thing. I have had problems with nausea and vomiting long before I ever had a baby and one thing that always makes it worse is sleep deprivation.

So imagine you have just spent the last 16 hours nauseous out of your mind and all you want to do is fall into a blissful state of unconsciousness so you don't have to feel sick anymore, but you can't. You're trapped lying in bed feeling sick and getting sicker by the hour because your poor body needs sleep so badly and pretty soon you're laying on the bathroom floor hoping to die and the vicious cycle just won't end. This is where Promethazine comes in. One little pill about 30 minutes before you want to sleep will settle your stomach and knock you out in one fell swoop.

Another favorite is phenergen. This only comes in I.V. form or as a suppository. You can also get it in a shot form, but it is most doctors don't have it on hand. When I am in the ER this is my top pick because it also has a great sedative effect.

Lastly, my favorite over-the-counter anti-nausea helper is good old Benadryl. Almost every OB I've ever heard of readily allows this for treating allergies in pregnant women. It is great because it puts you to sleep and helps you breathe better if you are actually suffering from allergies. It is safe to take daily, though I would suggest only using it at night because you will be unconscious shortly after taking it.

One anti-nausea medication I would suggest avoiding is Regelan. I only had this once, but the side effects can be terrifying. This drug basically dries you out so you feel like you've been in the desert with no water for days. When you're in the ER for nausea and vomiting they will not allow you to take anything by mouth until you haven't thrown up for a long time. Well, after they shot me with this stuff I snuck into the bathroom several times to run my tongue under the faucet because my mouth was so dry. It was really horrible and I won't let them give it to me again.

Some books that I also found helpful when researching treatment for nausea are: The Morning Sickness Companion by Elizabeth Kaledin, Managing Morning Sickness by Miriam Erik, and Pregnancy Sucks by Joanne Kimes. You can find all of these books at Barnes and Noble or Amazon.

The Fleurville Mothership

I'll be the first to admit that I have a sickness for diaper bags. I currently own and use 8 different bags. The first designer diaper bag I ever bought was a white cord Fleurville Mothership from babystyle. I bought it five years ago shortly after I had my first baby and it has consistently been a favorite. I consider the Fleurville the grandmother of all diaper bags, the biggest, the best, the original.

When I found out I was expecting my third child last year I went on a hunt for another stylish bag to carry. I have been looking at the same styles and materials for so long that everything seemed stale to me. Then I came upon this new Fleurville which is an exclusive pattern for babystyle.

They have made some nice changes since I last purchased a Fleurville. They now have a removable insulated bottle holder and a plastic wipes holder. They are no longer a fabric bag covered in plastic, now the patterns are printed right on the PVC free green LAM material. The bags still have tons of pockets for storage, a changing pad, and a carabiner clip for your keys.

I love these bags because they are beautiful, stain resistent, and big enough to carry everything you could ever need for a baby, yourself, and at least two other kids. I also love the comfortable no-slip strap.

A quick word of warning: this bag can carry so much stuff it can easily outweigh a small baby or an empty stroller, so be careful tossing it fully loaded on the back of certain strollers as I must admit I've tipped over more than one in my day.
